The Lists
Once upon a time, in Scranton, Pennsylvania, there was a fictional paper company named Dunder Mifflin. At one point, this company was run by an eccentric gentleman named Robert California, and in the first episode of season 8 of The Office (U.S., of course) he said this: “Some people doodle at work when they let their mind run. They draw houses, penises. Funny how the houses are always colonials and the penises are always circumcised. Don’t you think? Well, I doodle too, but I’m not an artist. So I draw words and lists.”
This quote hit me right in my left-brained can’t-draw-for-beans soul. I, too, doodle in words and lists more often than images. It is currently 2:19am on a Tuesday, and despite having work bright and early tomorrow morning (later this morning?) I can’t sleep. So instead, I present to you a list of my favorite lists to doodle when I’m bored, or when I have a really cool pen I want to use.
- Packing list for a vacation (real or fictional destination)
- Necessities in the event of a zombie apocalypse
- Christmas shopping list (appropriate all year ’round)
- Packing list for a camping trip
- Track list for a mixtape if people still made mixtapes (no, a Spotify playlist is not the same)
- Books I would bring to a deserted island
- Charities I would donate obscene amounts of money to if/when I make it big
- Title options for my memoir
- Disney characters I would Disneybound as, and what I’d need for the outfit
- Halloween costume ideas (again, appropriate all year ’round)
- Superheroes in order from power I would most like to have to power I would least like to have
- Foods I most want to eat at any given moment
- My nephew’s allergies (he has a goodly number of ’em, and an aunt’s gotta stay sharp)
- Tattoos I would like to get but probably never will
- Favorite movies I no longer have the attention span to watch all the way through in one sitting
- Coding languages I want to learn
- Themes for dinner parties I will never host
- Things I love about my amazing partner
- Potential names for my hopeful future dog
- TV shows I can use for background noise when doing chores like folding my laundry or washing dishes to make said chores less of a drag
- Things I should be doing besides writing this right now
Since #1 on that last list is sleep, I think I’ll go give that another shot. If I fall asleep in the next three minutes I’ll get a solid four hours before my alarm goes off. Goodnight, sweet denizens of the internet, and happy doodling!
